Preparation
Always research the company pre-interview. Visit their web site, or even test their customer handling skills by requesting a corporate brochure. Identify their competitors to understand how they differentiate themselves (see separate page on ‘Researching Employers’).

Appearance
Dress conservatively. Neutral and dark tones, neatly pressed garments and polished shoes create the best first impression. Ladies should wear light make-up and both genders should only allow a hint of fragrance.

Signals and mannerisms
Positive, strong body language will always convey confidence. Greet interviewers with a firm hand shake, maintaining smiling eye contact.

Questions
Prepare a list of job-related questions that focus on the future of the company, its products or services and career potential. Avoid questions relating to salary, benefits, and holidays at first interview.

Listen up
Demonstrate listening skills by allowing the interviewer to speak first and at length. Then ask any pertinent questions, concentrating on the interviewers’ responses.

Closing confidently
Express genuine interest in both the company and the opportunity. Finish with a very upbeat comment, stating reasons for wanting the company and the role.
